Aki: beginning camping in middle age
In a first-person article published in September 2026, Aki describes taking her first camping trip in June 2023, when she was in middle age. She had previously enjoyed preparing camp food at home; a suggestion from a reader prompted her to take the equipment to a campsite. Her account is written in Japanese, with an English translation available on the page.
Setting up the tent was the difficult part of the first outing. She followed the instructions and worked through several attempts before getting it up; cooking felt more familiar because she had practiced it before. She describes returning to camping and becoming more comfortable with the work of setting up and packing. A later birthday camping trip gave her another occasion to use those skills.

Miranda Goes Outside: a first night alone
In Miranda Goes Outside’s selected retrospective, she recalls a first solo camping overnight after earlier trips with other people. Before leaving she describes being nervous about handling the camp alone; after setting up and eating, the quiet at bedtime makes her notice that nervousness again.
The next morning she says she enjoyed choosing her own pace but missed having someone to talk to in the evening. She would go alone again, while still valuing trips with company. The account makes room for an unsettled night and a mixed assessment rather than treating the first outing as a test to pass.
Pulenaz: deciding how to spend a wet evening
On a later solo overnight, Pulenaz arrives expecting to read outside after dinner. Rain changes the plan, and she describes feeling uneasy about deciding by herself whether to shorten the stay. She moves her book and meal into the tent and spends the evening there, enjoying the time to read while remaining uncertain about the next morning’s weather.
On another solo outing she discusses planning a shorter evening walk so there is more time to settle at camp before dark. Her account connects the practical decisions of being alone with her mixed feelings, while WildBeare’s accounts describe attention drawn by sounds after dark.
WildBeare: returning to solo camps
WildBeare’s two selected solo outings follow an established camping routine. On the first, she describes enjoying the walk and the evening meal but feeling briefly uneasy when an unfamiliar sound reaches the tent after dark. On a later outing she describes a similar moment of alertness while settling down, alongside her enjoyment of the morning walk and time at camp.
She discusses those feelings as part of the trip and continues to show the ordinary work of packing and leaving. The two accounts show why a person might keep returning to solo camping while still acknowledging that some moments at night feel less comfortable.
Miranda’s introduction to the outdoors
Miranda says she learned about hiking and camping while working at an outdoor store during a college summer.
