Jessica Mills: building time on flat routes
Jessica “Dixie” Mills prepares for a long hike from a flat home area. In her first week she walks a 6 km local loop carrying a daypack, stopping once for a snack. Two weeks later she repeats the loop and adds another 3 km, taking the same pack and a longer food break. Her distances cover the walking route, not travel to its start.
The second outing lets her see how the packed bag feels later in the day. She moves her rain layer above the food so it is easier to reach and changes the timing of her break. The flat route helps her practice walking time and the sequence of packing, eating and repacking; it cannot reproduce a sustained mountain ascent.
Pulenaz: fitting walks into a flat week
Pulenaz walks a 3 km neighborhood route during the week and a 6 km path at the weekend. She takes water, a layer and a snack in her small pack. After the first longer walk she puts the snack in an outer pocket, because opening the main compartment at every stop interrupted the walk.
A short flight of steps near the route becomes an optional part of one outing, but the main practice remains walking on flat ground. Pulenaz leaves earlier for the weekend route so it fits around the rest of the day. Her account is useful for viewers who want to see how practice can fit a normal week when a hill is not nearby.
