Pulenaz at the barrier
Pulenaz enters the rink for an adult beginner session and holds the barrier while she finds her balance. Other adults are already moving around the ice. She keeps the moment in her video instead of cutting straight to a glide: she looks down at her skates, laughs at her tiny steps and stays at the edge until she is ready to move.
She is concerned about falling and how long a knock might interrupt the rest of her week. She does not treat the barrier as something to hide. When another learner passes her, she keeps one hand on the rail, makes a few careful steps and pauses to let the skater go by. For someone who worries about taking longer to recover from a fall, her caution is easy to recognize.
The useful part of her account comes after she loses balance and sits down on the ice. She takes her time, accepts help from the instructor and returns to the barrier. Later she tries a short stretch away from it before coming back. She is pleased to have tried, but does not pretend that one outing has made her fearless.
Being new among other adults
In a later session Pulenaz arrives while other adult learners are practicing. She initially worries that everyone will see how slowly she moves. One person stops to adjust a skate and another returns to the barrier, giving her a chance to notice that the group is working at different paces. She stays near the edge for the first part of the session and joins the others for a short practice when she feels ready.
Her videos are a good choice for someone who wants company through the social awkwardness as well as the skating. The camera keeps the hesitations and the return to the rail in the story, so progress is not reduced to a single confident pass across the ice.
