Pulenaz: a passage at walking pace
On her first organized caving outing, Pulenaz follows the leader and the rest of the group into an easy passage. The view is close: a patch of wall, the back of the person ahead and the strip of floor caught in her light. As she moves her head, the lit patch moves too. What is behind it drops out of view, so the passage seems to arrive in small pieces rather than as one wide landscape.
The group slows on a muddy stretch. Pulenaz watches the person ahead continue, then takes her own time over the uneven floor. Mud clings to her footwear and makes a soft sound with each step. She pauses when the others pause and hears their voices nearby, followed by the small sounds of people moving again. Nothing in the sequence depends on reaching a grand chamber; the ordinary distance between stops has its own rhythm.
A light crosses the wall and brings out folds and rough patches that she had not noticed on the way in. Pulenaz turns back for another look before continuing with the group. Her curiosity is easy to share because she leaves room for the viewer to notice with her, including the moments when the view is just rock, mud and the light of the people ahead.
Start with Pulenaz if you want the feeling of being new to the surroundings. She gives the everyday movement time on screen and lets the confined view and the group’s pace explain why even a straightforward passage feels different from walking outdoors.
Amanda Bridges-Dunn: attention to the underground
Amanda Bridges-Dunn, who creates as Adventuring Light, describes making caving and outdoor videos. She says she wants to show the hidden underground and raise awareness of its fragile ecosystems. Her site includes a trip gallery with a scalloped passage and a formation room, alongside images of a beginner grotto trip.

In a passage, Amanda lets the view settle on a ridged wall before following the light farther along it. The rock fills the frame, then the view widens enough to place it beside the rest of the passage. A companion’s light appears ahead as the group moves on. The change of view makes a modest surface worth looking at without making it the finish line of the trip.
Amanda is a good follow when the appeal is the underground environment itself. Pulenaz’s sequence is built around the newcomer adjusting to a place; Amanda’s gives the shape and texture of the passage more of the attention.
Becky the Traveller: a guided trip in Budapest
Becky’s account of a guided Budapest caving tour, published in 2018 and updated in 2019, describes roughly two hours underground with head torches. She recalls dusty overalls, crawling through parts of the cave and gathering with her group for the guide’s instructions. Her pictures and written account show an outing made up of movement and time with the group, not only a destination.

For a different format, Elise Freshwater-Blizzard describes discovering the underground world through the University of Sheffield speleological society and creating the YouTube documentary series Deep Down Under. Her documentary approach is a useful next choice for someone who wants to spend more time with caving as a subject after Pulenaz’s newcomer perspective.
